Spring Cleaning is Magical. Try These Tips to Fall in Love with Your Wardrobe Again

While you may have embraced the athleisure look, chances are you still have a closet full of clothing that you wore pre-pandemic.
And while you may not be wearing all of your wardrobe, there will come a time (I pray there will come a time) when you will want to wear more of those clothes again.
So what better time to clean out the closet than now, when you can almost objectively look at all the things you have and really decide if they warrant the space they’re taking up and you can ask yourself if they’re worth keeping at all.
Don’t worry, I’m not going to suggest you get rid of your heels. I’m not even going to suggest you donate your nice sweaters (we need the nice tops for the Zooms anyway).
What I will suggest is that you set aside time this month to go through every item in your closet. That’s right - every single piece and lay it out on the ground or your bed or wherever it will all fit.
If Cher Horowitz could do it, then you can, too.
Then go through each piece. Do you wear it anymore? Would you wear it again when the world settles? Or did you find you didn’t miss it much in the first place?
Make sure you create piles as you sort - a keep, a donate, a recycle or a consign pile. Get the donation pile in your car as soon as possible and take it away. Trust me, it’s better for everyone to get that stash out of your house quickly.
By this time you will have made significant improvement in your closet. GO YOU. But you’re not done yet. So turn up your favorite playlist and finish strong.
Once you’ve gone through your clothes (which is the hardest part), put the “keep” stuff back. Hang items on matching hangers and invest in some containers for anything loose like accessories or articles of clothing you wouldn’t hang or fold (i.e. delicates or workout attire).
I love these wood hangers from IKEA and these versatile bins from The Container Store.
Set a goal for yourself and don’t stop until you’ve met the goal. Something as simple as, I’m not going to take a break from cleaning the closet until I’ve spent at least one hour doing it. Once you reach the hour, see how far you’ve come and see if you can push yourself to finish. Telling a friend is also a great way to hold yourself accountable. They will know that you’ve started it and can encourage you to finish (bonus if they ask you for the after photo).
Remember that purging your closet takes a little dedication but the after feeling really does feel magical. A clean closet can transform you every single day when you look at your pretty clothes hanging on matching hangers. It can boost your spirit and encourage you to want to spend more time in your space - even if it’s just you that sees it.
