I have more than one happy place.

But one of my favorite places is in my living room. It’s where I have my best brainstorms and it also happens to have really inspiring natural light.

Isn’t that interesting? That a space can be so uplifting that thoughts would come more freely and ideas flow faster?

If you remember nothing else from this article, remember this - we are influenced by the spaces we spend time in - and this year, we’ve all spent an unprecedented amount of time in our homes.

And all this time spent (even pre-2020) has me convinced that caring for our homes is self-care in the realest way.

Life's short. Talk fast. Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life coming soon.

As amazing as a great pedicure feels, I feel equally (and maybe even more) calm after I’ve successfully organized my kids’ toys or sorted my own closet. Containment. Yes, please. Seeing all the things and seeing them in separated zones. Yes, yes, please.

Another reason home-care is self-care is because our homes are silently powerful. They impact how we think and feel without ever saying a word. Give that one some thought and consider the mood your home gives to you now. Would you change anything about it? Could it be improved? Do you love spending time in your space? Why or why not?

I fully recommend taking time this season to enjoy your home and invest a little time and attention to make it as cozy and inviting as possible - because how you feel in your home matters.

Try one of these simple ideas to embrace the season and achieve self-care through home-care:

  • Organize your closet! Move your summer items to the back or put them on a top shelf and make room for cozy sweaters and jackets. An edited closet is life changing and rearranging based on season can be a great way to get lesser-worn items in front of you.

  • Nothing sets the tone of your space like a scent. Invest in a phthalate-free candle infused with essential fall notes to bring the season inside and you will feel a difference. I love this Pumpkin Spice candle from Sweet Water Decor.

  • You may not be hosting large gatherings this year but don’t let that stop you from decorating for the holidays. Hang up that fall banner from Target and hang it high! Those who embrace the changing seasons really do feel happier.

  • And finally, clean one spot that is frequently used. Don’t just give it a little wipe down either - give it a thorough cleaning. You’ll feel happier because you’re productive and you’ll be happy to know that you’ll see and feel the fruits of your labor - instantly. Play your favorite podcast while you do it and it’ll be even more fulfilling.

Remember, just because you’re embracing home life more doesn’t mean you need to feel stuck or bored. Make your space feel special again and it’ll make all the difference for you.
