We're now in September which means that the holidays are going to be here in a blink. And the way I see it, you can feel a tinge of overwhelm about all there is to do before the end of the year or you can do a little organizing to make sure the season runs smoothly.
If you’re like me, you want to take in all the cozy-sweater-wearing, hot-cocoa-sipping, caroling time there is. Okay, maybe not the caroling part but you most certainly want to experience the memorable, tasty stuff.
Establish a zone
Ideally you want all of your holiday decor in one location. I recommend that you store seasonal decor in your attic, garage or shed because they're only used seasonally. Leave inside closets for items that you use more regularly. For things like wrapping paper and gift bags (this includes birthday cards and bags), keep those in an accessible location inside your house. You can get creative by creating a wrapping station in a home office closet, behind a door (I love this option from The Container Store) or in a multi-purpose area where you have space for all the things.
Take inventory and only keep what you use, need and love
Go through your supplies and decor each season (this will most likely happen right before each holiday). Taking inventory of your supplies helps show you what you need and what you don’t. Maybe there were decorations that you didn’t put out last year, so those may be ideal ones to donate. Similar to your wardrobe, you should only keep holiday items that you love and are excited to showcase.
Invest in containers to keep things organized
When it comes to things like Halloween or Christmas decor, I recommend using larger bins that stack and that can hold a variety of decorations. Even if you don't have a bunch of stuff to hang in your house, a container is far more pleasing to the eye than a free-standing knick-knack that you bring out every year. Places like The Home Depot, Lowe’s and even Target have affordable and durable options.
Remember, proactively organizing your holiday supplies can really help make for a smooth transition everytime you want to put things up and take them down.
