If Virgo season left you a bit overworked and ready to add some balance into your life, then the sun moving into Libra on September 22 will feel like a breath of fresh air. Libra is the sign of the scales, reminding us that when we pay too much attention to one thing, we aren’t paying enough attention to something else.

While all signs of the zodiac naturally build on the ones that come before it, I especially like the progression of Leo to Virgo to Libra.

Libra season is a beautiful time to recognize that even though it’s a blast to party all the time, or that you can accomplish insane things with intense focus on work, allowing yourself space for both is when you can feel most fulfilled.

This Libra season, we are working to bring ourselves back into balance, and as a bonus, we have some extra support. Mercury is also in Libra and will be retrograde nearly the entire time the sun is in Libra. Mercury retrograde is one of the most well-known astral events — and one of the most feared … but it doesn’t need to be! A retrograde period occurs when a planet appears to move backwards in the sky (planets can’t actually move backwards, as it’s all about our vantage point here on earth in relation to other planets), and from an energetic standpoint, things in your life may feel like they’re moving backwards as well. If you’re scratching your head, wondering how this might be supportive, I promise that it is.

With Mercury travelling with the sun in Libra, we aren’t just experiencing greater balance, we are actively thinking about it.

because Mercury is forcing you to truly assess what’s working and what’s not. One of the ways that Mercury will bring this to your attention is through your relationships. Libra also rules our closest partners, so when your best friend or significant other mentions to you that you’ve seemed a little off, or overly focused on things that don’t seem to be in alignment with who you really are, instead of getting defensive (and that’s easy to do, I know), pause, and reflect on what they are saying to you. Is there truth to it? Can you see yourself reflected in their concerns? Is this something you need to consider?

While in the throes of your own exploration of balance and what it means to you, be mindful that you don’t get caught in analysis-paralysis. Libra makes it easy, almost too easy in fact, to see both sides of every situation. This is both a blessing and a curse. The key now is to realize that you don’t have to take any action until Scorpio season and to just let information come to you. Make small adjustments if you feel like you want to try on different habits. Think of it like sampling fragrance: You get tiny vials to try, decide what works best with your chemistry, and eventually purchase the full-size bottle of the ones that smell best, while you never again bother with the ones that don’t. It’s a great time for experimenting with what feels best for you, and you may be surprised with what you find.

Energetically, nothing needs to stick until we work through the post-retrograde shadow period in late October, so try not to let yourself feel rushed or anxious about your options.

Over the course of the next month, use the energy of Libra to evaluate where your own equilibrium may have shifted in ways that make you feel uncomfortable, and consider what you need to do to bring yourself back into balance. You don’t have to have it all, do it all or be it all by society’s standards, but finding what fits into your personal “all” and how to celebrate that balance through your own fulfillment is what this Libra season is all about.
