What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some, but for everyone
— Lyrics by Hal David, sung by Jackie DeShannon

On February 18, the sun floats out of Aquarius and into Pisces.  Where Aquarius had us focused on the groups we are a part of (and the politics that go along with the lines that separate us), Pisces dissolves our boundaries to show us what unites us: Love.

While it’s never been hard to find something you disagree with someone else on, lately it feels easier than ever.  The divisions that exist in our world are more pronounced than at any other time in our recent history.  This past Aquarius season especially has had us staunchly dug in to our own positions, taking a stand for what we believe is right...and pointing out where someone else is wrong in the process.  And while the sun’s 30 day trip through Pisces won’t be the cure-all we need, it can be the place we start to mend fences with those we differ from.

Pisces is the final sign of the zodiac, and the place where we experience source energy (and feel free to substitute God, universe, flying spaghetti monster, or any benefic deity of your choice for “source”). It’s where we see just how small we are in this vast universe, and that our differences don’t actually matter much in the grand scheme of our lives because in the end, we all end up in the same place. Pisces evaporates our borders to show us all that connects us instead of what separates us. And sure, when our lives are all so different from each other’s, it might seem like we can’t find that common thread to pull. But from the beginning of time, there has always been one experience that every human has had in common with each other, something we all need.

The energy of love exists on a spectrum. It can be wildly fulfilling for some and elusive for others. Some people have it in abundance. Some people are seeking it. Some people don’t know they have it. Some people have experienced such an absence of it that it has impaired them psychologically. Some people exude it in a way that almost feels tangible. Some get it from their dogs. Some from their partners. Others from their friends, or their families, or both if they are very lucky. Love is the one constant throughout time, from the beginning of the universe until now, and it will continue long after we are gone.

Pisces reminds us that love is what truly connects us all.  That despite all of the fights on social media, violence from insurrectionists, financial and political unrest, and even wars, there IS a way to heal all of this, because we all come from the same place, the same source.  Something I’ve been hearing lately is that if you want world peace, reach out to the person you aren’t speaking to.  And even if you can’t reach out (or in some cases, if it isn’t safe), send it to them from your heart to where they are.  Love does not know limits or boundaries.

And if you’re looking at the world, wondering what the hell has happened, how we got here and how we will fix it, do as Jesus said:  Stop trying to remove the speck from your neighbor’s eye before removing the plank from your own.  In other words, take some responsibility for yourself.  Where do you need to be more loving to yourself?  Where do you need to forgive yourself?  Where do you need to make peace within?  The discord that lives within us is what facilitates our external anger.  Look back over your life since the last time the sun was in Pisces.  The energy has been chaotic and furious.  Where can you soften and let some of that go?  Where can you begin to release the divisions that you’ve clung to and shift into finding common ground?

Gandhi said, “If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him… We need not wait to see what others do.” Take advantage of this Pisces season to start the ripple. Embrace love in yourself and share it with those around you. It’s what we need right now.
